Etsy SEO in 2024: The Complete Guide to Ranking Higher in Search

Why Etsy SEO Matters More Than Ever

Over 96 million buyers browse Etsy every year. But with over 100 million active listings competing for their attention, showing up in search is no longer optional — it's the difference between a thriving shop and one that gets zero traffic.

The good news: most sellers are doing SEO wrong. That means if you do it right, you have a massive edge.

How Etsy's Search Algorithm Actually Works

Etsy's search algorithm (called "Etsy Search") ranks listings based on two main factors:

  • Query matching — how well your title, tags, and description match what the buyer searched for
  • Listing quality score — clicks, conversions, reviews, and recency

You can't control your conversion rate on day one. But you can control query matching — and that's where most sellers lose.

The Title: Your Most Valuable Real Estate

Etsy gives you 140 characters for your title. Most sellers use 60-70. That's leaving keywords on the table.

A well-optimized title should:

  • Start with your primary keyword (what a buyer would type to find this exact product)
  • Include secondary keywords naturally — Etsy reads your title as phrases, not just individual words
  • Fill as close to 140 characters as possible without stuffing

Bad title: "Wooden Cutting Board"

Good title: "Personalized Wooden Cutting Board, Custom Engraved Kitchen Gift, Wedding Gift for Couple, Housewarming Gift, Maple Wood Charcuterie Board"

Tags: All 13, Every Time

Etsy gives you 13 tags. Use all 13. Every unused tag is a missed opportunity to be found.

Each tag can be up to 20 characters. Use multi-word phrases (Etsy calls these "long-tail" keywords) rather than single words. "personalized gift" is far more useful than "gift" alone.

Tips for tags:

  • Don't repeat exact phrases from your title — Etsy already indexes your title, so tags are your chance to cover more ground
  • Think about the occasion ("birthday gift for her"), the recipient ("gift for best friend"), and the style ("minimalist home decor")
  • Use all available characters in each tag

Your Description: Write for Buyers AND Search

Etsy says descriptions are not a ranking factor — but that's only partially true. Descriptions affect conversion rates, and conversion rates absolutely affect ranking.

A good description:

  • Opens with your primary keyword naturally in the first sentence
  • Answers the buyer's top questions: size, materials, personalization options, processing time, shipping
  • Uses bullet points for scannability
  • Is at least 300 words — thin descriptions convert poorly

The One Thing Most Sellers Miss

Keyword consistency. Etsy's algorithm looks for your keywords to appear in your title, tags, AND description. A listing with "personalized wedding gift" in the title but not in tags or description sends mixed signals.

The listings that rank best have the same core keywords appearing across all three fields — naturally, not stuffed.

How to Check If Your SEO Is Working

Etsy's Shop Stats show you where your traffic is coming from. If "Etsy search" is below 30-40% of your total views, your SEO needs work.

Look at which listings get the most search traffic and reverse-engineer why — then apply those patterns to your weaker listings.
